Postcards from international gatherings
Postcard from Rio de Janeiro GLAM 2024
From November 15 to 18, Rio de Janeiro hosted GLAM 2024, a landmark event organized by Mensa Latin America that brought together over 250 gifted individuals from around the world. With attendees from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Sweden, Norway, Germany, and beyond, this first-of-its-kind meeting focused on uniting talent, exchanging ideas, and addressing the unique challenges faced by people with exceptional intellectual abilities, particularly in Latin America.
Held at the South American Copacabana Hotel, GLAM 2024 offered a dynamic agenda filled with conferences, workshops, and leisure activities designed to encourage collaboration and innovation. Key discussions revolved around mental health under the pressure of high performance, advancements in artificial intelligence, and the influence of music and language on cognitive development. The event also fostered personal connections in a relaxed atmosphere, allowing participants to share experiences and build lasting networks.
GLAM 2024 highlighted the importance of increasing recognition and support for gifted individuals in Latin America. Despite the region’s rich potential, many challenges persist, from limited identification processes to insufficient educational resources for the gifted community. This event served as a call to action, emphasizing the need for stronger initiatives and collaboration to unlock untapped talent in the region.
More than a conference, GLAM 2024 was a celebration of Latin America’s role in the global gifted community. It reinforced the region’s capacity to lead discussions and initiatives that can transform how talent is nurtured and developed. By uniting brilliant minds from diverse backgrounds, this historic event underscored the importance of strengthening ties across Latin American countries and inspired a vision of a future where intelligence is recognized and celebrated as a cornerstone for progress.
Postcard from Taipei AMG 2024
The Asian Mensa Gathering 2024, hosted for the first time by Mensa Taiwan, was an unforgettable event that lit up Taipei with an energy and je ne sais quoi of an era.
Bringing together 400 participants from 29 different countries, AMG Taipei 2024 was my third AMG after AMG Seoul and AMG Bali, both in 2022 (Seoul was carried forward because of the COVID pandemic) and an incredible celebration of the Mensa spirit, a renewal of old friendships, and the beginning of new ones!
Beyond tours of Taiwan’s cultural landmarks and its key cuisines, Mensa Taiwan had put together talks on cutting-edge ideas in the arts, both cultural and martial as well as the sharing of personal journeys from Mensans of walks of life and industries on topics like sustainable development, the push of emerging technologies like AI in a Taiwanese context, and even unconventional career pathways such as the lives of an actress and even a male porn star (!!!!)
Excitement carried through other activities, too, like a high-stakes mahjong tournament and even an interactive Halloween and zombie-apocalypse themed escape room challenge where familiar faces and new ones alike teamed up to cure zombification through push-ups, puzzles, and pushing ourselves to the limit.
Spirits soared during the gala dinner in a night that unfolded in grand style as Mensans dressed to the nines, watched traditional Taiwanese aboriginal dances and swords dances, took part in auctions for Mensa merch, and danced the night away in an exhilarating DJ set that drew everyone to the dance floor, bringing an electric close to the evening. As we partied, the conversations flowed freely. Laughter and conversation filled the air in this inter-civilizational gathering that for many of us was our first encounter with Taiwan and for some, even Asia. All in all, it was great fun.
Congratulations Mensa Taiwan on this incredible event, and I look forward to coming back soon, as well as to AMG 2025 in Shonan and Yokohama, Japan from 13th – 15th November 2025!
Postcard from Bucharest EMAG 2024
After last year’s EMAG held in Rotterdam, this year, from July 31 to August 4, Mensa Romania, with Bucharest at the center of events, was a fantastic host for the annual gathering of all European Mensa groups. If you hadn’t previously had the chance to visit Romania and Bucharest itself, no matter how well-informed you were or how thoroughly you researched must-see locations, surprises were guaranteed, and you certainly wouldn’t remain indifferent to the sights from the moment you traveled by public transport from the airport straight into the city’s core.
Buildings lined up one after another until the monumental Triumphal Arch appeared before you. It was then you realized you had arrived in the “Paris of the East” and that what awaited you was far from a random assortment of diverse structures. Admiring the architecture that stood as a testament to a rich history, you began to wonder if five days would be enough to even scratch the surface of all that surrounded you.
The gathering began with an Ice Breaker event at one of the most beautiful places in the city, “Linea | Closer to the Moon”, which truly lives up to its name. From one of its rooftops, the view stretched across domed rooftops and through the alleys of the old town. Attendees came from all corners of the world, not just Europe. New friendships were formed, and old ones rekindled. It was heartwarming to see that positive energy and good ideas transcended differences in nationality and age, with the vibrant energy of diverse yet similar minds filling the space.
The hosts ensured that the next few days were filled with a rich program, so everyone could find their niche in one of the represented fields. Whether you were into programming, writing, medicine, science, art, or simply couldn’t decide which field you belonged to (like most people), there were active workshops to participate in, providing opportunities to connect with others for potential collaboration or simply exchange knowledge and ideas.
Since AI has ushered us into a completely new era, placing us at the threshold of a new revolution in human history, much was said about the positive and negative impacts of implementing artificial intelligence in various spheres.
A lecture on viruses, covering systematization, basic pharmacological principles, and reflections on COVID-19, left a particularly strong impression on Mensa’s youngest members.
Undoubtedly, the human brain is the most fascinating machine, much like the cosmos, continuously being explored—whether scientifically or directly. Naturally, several lectures and discussions were dedicated to the evolution of the human brain and contemporary efforts to deepen the understanding of cognitive processes for the advancement of humanity.
Mathematicians and skilled illustrators were particularly intrigued by a lecture and workshop on fractals, while another group of enthusiasts tried to fit some of the city’s monumental buildings onto A4 paper using various drawing and painting techniques.
Lovers of the written word who actively create prose or poetry had the chance to engage in a creative process and constructive discussion with the brilliant Melani Bell, which spread through the room so quickly that an hour felt like just 15 minutes. If you were more coordinated than I am, and I believe you were, you could try your hand at various dance styles.
Earlier, I mentioned some of the city’s monumental landmarks, but no review would be complete without mentioning more of them, as they form the backbone of Bucharest’s cultural and historical heritage.
The Palace of Parliament, or the People’s House as older residents still call it, is the largest building in Europe and the second largest in the world. Nicolae Ceaușescu, a not-so-beloved figure from the communist era, mandated that all materials used in its construction be of local origin, even importing silkworms from the East to ensure the silk produced was domestically sourced. When the tons of marble, bronze, glass, wood, steel, and fabrics used in its construction and furnishing are calculated, the palace is unequivocally the heaviest building according to the Guinness Book of Records. This neoclassical giant, adorned with Doric and Ionic columns, cannot be fully explored, as only 30% of the building is in use, with a large portion still unfinished. To enhance the elevation on which the palace stands, one of the most beautiful boulevards was built, extending to the city’s urban area.
The University building is another city landmark, having been graced by many prominent figures such as Emil Cioran, Eugène Ionesco, and Mircea Eliade.
Another must-mention is the Romanian Athenaeum, adorned not only with Doric columns but also Ionic and Corinthian ones, emphasizing the beauty and subtlety associated with the building’s functions. The Athenaeum is home to the “George Enescu” Philharmonic, which gathers annually in a concert hall decorated with a fresco frieze.
Other must-see places include the National Museum of Romanian History, housing numerous relics, and the National Museum of Art with its European Art Gallery. Besides the privilege of seeing Brancusi’s The Danaid, you won’t remain indifferent to sculptures by Camille Claudel or Rodin, or paintings by the greatest European artists like Monet, Courbet, Signac, Rubens, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Van Eyck, El Greco, Da Vinci, Bellini, and many others.
The Gala Dinner took place in a lovely atmosphere, with everyone seizing the opportunity to exchange impressions and experiences accumulated over the past few days. My colleagues Marina Vojinović, Ilijana Tijanić, Vladan Barović, Tripo Vuković, Mitar Đukanović, and I made a contribution to promoting Montenegro as the host of EMAG 2026, which will be one of the most significant events for our country.
Unlike last year, when the team’s task was to secure a hosting location, this year we focused more on acquiring useful organizational skills and representing Montenegro through informal communication with other members. Montenegro managed to win great sympathy and interest; now, it remains to use the opportunity to present our country through the cultural, intellectual, and natural beauty we have in abundance.
Postcard from Perth IBD 2024
by the Mensa International Executive Committee (ExComm)
The 2024 Perth IBD Meeting was an unforgettable experience for all the delegates and guests.
Although the main focus was the two-and-a-half-day IBD business meeting, held at Perth’s Pan Pacific Hotel, the IBD24 Organising Team arranged an action-packed social schedule, keeping everyone entertained in the evenings and during the post-IBD tours of Western Australia.
The festivities kicked off with an exciting Icebreaker on Thursday evening in the River Ballroom, and Friday night was a time for attendees to explore Perth’s diverse culinary scene. The highlight of Saturday night was the Gala Dinner, where guests enjoyed a luxurious three-course dinner, a live performance by a traditional Australian Aboriginal musician, dancing and a really tough Mensa quiz (thanks to quizmaster Kymberley Wilson for giving us all brain ache during dinner 🙂 )
Sunday blended business with leisure. After the morning meeting, delegates and guests embarked on a delightful tour of Caversham Wildlife Park, mingling with native Australian animals under expert guidance. The fun didn’t stop there – the legendary Helsinki Party capped off the weekend with a night of festive revelry and stimulating conversations.
For those extending their stay, the post-IBD tours offered further adventure. The Rottnest Island tour on Monday included close encounters with adorable quokkas and magnificent scenery. The more extensive Margaret River Region tour immersed guests in wine tasting, coastal vistas and local wildlife.
The 2024 Perth IBD Meeting successfully combined the important business of Mensa International governance with enriching conversations and exciting social events, leaving participants with the feeling of a job well done and memories that will last a lifetime.
Postcard from “The Paris of the East”
The EMAG in Bucharest was incredibly fun. From the moment some of us touched down for the pretour in Brașov to the bittersweet farewell brunch in Bucharest, the experience was a perfect blend of culture, camaraderie, and, of course, incredible food.
The pretour, though peppered with a few delays, was a charming journey through Romania’s rich history.
We visited the iconic Peleș and Bran castles, each steeped in tales that brought out the historian (and vampire fan) in all of us. The Rupea Citadel stood proudly as a reminder of Romania’s fortified past, while our visit to the quaint town of Viscri gave us a glimpse into why King Charles holds Romanian villages so dear. And let’s not forget the walking tour of Brașov, a picturesque city where every corner seemed to tell a story. The culinary delights we sampled along the way? Simply divine.
As the official gathering kicked off in Bucharest, the mood was electric. The icebreaker event at Linea was the perfect start, with a stunning view of the city setting the tone for the days ahead. EMAG 2024 offered a plethora of activities, ensuring there was something for everyone, regardless of age or interest. From fascinating museum visits – whether your passion is history, art, or science – to lively karaoke nights that had everyone belting out their favorite tunes, the schedule was packed with fun and enriching experiences.
The highlight for many was the Gala Dinner – Romanian hospitality at its finest. The food was, as always, exceptional and more than enough, and there was plenty of drink to go around, keeping in line with the lively Romanian spirit. The evening was a celebration of old friendships and new connections, with laughter echoing late into the night.
The farewell brunch was a mix of emotions as we said our goodbyes, already reminiscing about the incredible experiences we’d shared. In short, EMAG 2024 was a beautiful blend of cultural exploration, engaging activities, and unforgettable memories. Here’s to another year of Mensa magic in Cardiff!
Postcard from Dallas: a delegate’s view of IBD 2023
by Bojan Lešnik
As it is every year, the delegates from all over the world met in October to discuss the past, present, and future of Mensa. This year’s IBD was in Dallas Texas, and as the saying goes, “everything is bigger in Texas,” beginning with the hotel, continuing with the conference room and the snacks, and ending with the Texas fair.
The IBD meeting began with the icebreaker at the “Cidercade,” where we could try a few ciders, play some arcade games, and get to know each other. There was also some barbecue to try, of course. Over the next few days, we delegates went to work and confirmed some Texas big decisions (pun intended).
Among those decisions were: The go-ahead for the new adaptive IQ testing and the final implementation, the go-ahead for the first Gathering of Latin America Mensa or GLAM (the logo is great) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2024, and so much more. We also discussed national Mensa struggles and success stories and how to implement solutions them in our local groups and were only briefly interrupted by the partial sun eclipse.
At the end of the meetings, we went to the Texas State Fair, tried a few foods, saw some pig races, listened to country music, and finished our stay in style.
Finishing up with a Texas/Aussie blend…
See y’all Down Under next year in Perth!
Postcard from Seoul: celebrating our 1st AMG
by Deok-hyeon Hwang
The 2023 Asia-Pacific Mensa Gathering (AMG) in Seoul was an extraordinary five-day event that left attendees exhilarated and inspired. Marking a historic moment since the establishment of Mensa Korea in 1996, this AMG brought together Mensans from over 10 Asian countries – including Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, and Singapore – for an unforgettable experience.
From the bustling streets of Jongno and Myeong-dong to the serene Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul, the excitement began even before the official start on April 26th. Attendees shared their anticipation online as they explored iconic South Korean locations.
President Eun Joo Lee kicked off the event with an engaging ice-breaking session, uniting around 80 international Mensans in a friendly atmosphere. The activities were diverse and captivating, from the ‘Gimbap’ making and Fitness seminar to the inspiring Mensan Showcase Talk under the theme of ‘Turning Point’, featuring speeches from members of each country.
The AMG wasn’t just about intellectual pursuits; it was a cultural immersion of our country’s rich heritage. The Asia-Pacific Mensas’ Presidency Meeting at Korea House, a royal court-style restaurant, showcased traditional Korean cuisine prepared by Chef Son Seung-dal. Attendees indulged in Yakgwa and Sikhye, experiencing authentic Korean flavours.
Exploring both the past and the future, Mensans visited the Korean Folk Village, National Folk Museum, and Gyeongbokgung Palace, marvelling at Korea’s traditional beauty and culture. A visit to the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) provided a sobering reminder of the division of the Korean peninsula – a unique experience, even for many Koreans.
The Gala Dinner on a cruise along the Han River was a glamorous affair, filled with laughter and camaraderie. Members exchanged letters, with drawings of the Merlion from Singapore and the Panda from China symbolizing strengthened friendships. Naoya Takahashi of Japan Mensa was honoured at a plaque presentation ceremony for winning the annual Intelligence game.
However, the highlight of the AMG was undoubtedly the Dance Time, where President Eun Joo Lee, Mensa Korea and AMG board members danced to PSY’s iconic “Gangnam Style.” This electrifying moment encapsulated the spirit of the event – a celebration of intelligence, culture, and friendship, making the Asia-Pacific Mensa Gathering in South Korea a truly memorable and exhilarating experience for all.
Fun times in Rotterdam – EMAG 2023
by Vanessa Sauvade
I just came back from EMAG 2023 in Rotterdam, and you know what? I had some great times there! It was hosted in the WTC of Rotterdam and around 940 people attended. It begun with the Ice Breaker, followed few days after by the Gala Dinner and closed with the ritual Farewell Brunch.
As well as the flagship events, members could attend lectures (improving online security, green aviation, evolutionary psychology, climate change, polder model, etc.) and workshops (nail art, bachata, LGBTIQ+ meet & greet, cha-cha, decorating a Dutch wooden shoe, HIQ and procrastination, etc.), and enjoy tours and museums, escape rooms, and other fun activities such as shooting, laser games, a jigsaw competition, Segway riding, canoeing, and climbing. There was also a room open around the clock for board games and chit chat.
What I liked most was seeing my friends from all over the Europe again. The Gala Dinner was in a church and it was very classy. There were many activities scheduled at the same time, so there was always something to do that I could enjoy!
See you at the 2024 EMAG in Bucharest, Romania 2024!
Tales from a magical island – Bali AMG 2023
by Naoya Takahashi
From November 2nd to 5th, the Asia-Pacific Mensa Gathering (AMG) 2023 took place in Bali, a magical island in Indonesia! The AMG is an international gathering primarily for members living in the Asian and Western Pacific regions, but welcoming members from all over the world.
At this AMG, there were around 180 participants from more than 20 countries. We started with the Welcome Dinner at Menega Cafe in beautiful Jimbaran Beach. Next day, we had the Opening Ceremony at Pullman Legian Beach Hotel, which was the venue of the AMG 2023 in Bali. After that, there were some interesting presentations, workshops and games at the venue.
On the 3rd day of the AMG, we had a wonderful Gala Dinner at Atlas Beach Club, which is the largest beach club in the world! On November 5th, we had Amazing Race at Legian Kuta, Sababay Winery Tour, ATV & Rafting Adventure in Ubud and Nusa Penida Tour & Snorkeling. Finally, from November 6th to 9th, there was a tour in Solo and Yogyakarta.
Everything was great and successful, and this AMG became a fantastic experience for those who attended the AMG for the first time, those who have joined it several times and those who often come to the AMGs and other big Mensa gatherings!
The AMG 2024 takes place in Taipei, Taiwan from October 24th to 26th, and the AMG 2025 takes place in Yokohama, Japan (schedule being adjusted).
See you at the next AMG!
