Northeastern Brazil Regional Gathering

Dates: May 2nd – May 3rd
Location: Fortaleza (state of Ceara), Brazil

Only for members and their guests!

📣📣📣📣 In early May, Fortaleza – a vibrant coastal city in northeastern Brazil – became the stage for Ôxe, the first-ever regional gathering hosted by Mensa Brazil. The event took place on May 2nd and 3rd, strategically nestled between the national Labor Day holiday (May 1st) and the weekend, giving participants time to rest, travel, and explore the city.

Brazil’s continental size poses an unique challenge to nationwide presential engagement. For many members in the northeast, attending events in the southeast (where most national gatherings traditionally occur) means long, expensive flights and significant time off. Recognizing this, Mensa Brazil is embracing a new model: regional events designed to strengthen local communities and bring Mensa closer to its members – both literally and figuratively.

Ôxe brought together over 120 participants, including adult Mensans and gifted children and teens from our Young Gifted (“Jovens Brilhantes”) program. But more than just numbers, the event stood out for its energy, inclusiveness, and cultural celebration.

The name “Ôxe” itself is a playful nod to a popular expression from the northeast, used to express surprise, curiosity, or emotion – making it a fitting title for an event that surprised and delighted everyone who attended. Spelled “Oshi”, with emphasis on the letter O, it can be translated as an interjection, like “Wow!”. 🙂

🤩 Ôxe was designed with three core objectives:

1. Strengthen engagement in the northeast: By bringing the event closer to home, members who had previously found it difficult to participate were finally able to connect in person with fellow Mensans. 💙

2. Amplify local voices: The event made space for talent from the region to shine. A highlight was a comic book workshop led by Daniel Brandão, a celebrated local artist, who worked with the Young Gifted group to create and reflect through visual storytelling. 🦸‍♂️

3. Promote Mensa in the broader community: One of the most successful outreach actions was inviting GM Rafael Leitão, Brazil’s top-ranked chess player and a proud northeasterner, to give a keynote lecture and play a simultaneous exhibition match. The event was open to both Mensans and local chess enthusiasts, drawing significant attention from the media and chess circles alike. ♟️

A Diverse and Thoughtful Program

The event featured a mix of lectures and hands-on workshops:

  • 👨🏻‍🎓 Talks on education, adult autism, and giftedness

  • 🤖 Interactive sessions in math, robotics, painting, dance, and circus arts

  • 😎 Dedicated time for socializing, sharing ideas, and simply having fun

All of this was carried out with a strong emphasis on inclusion and neurodiversity. Social gatherings were held in quieter spaces to accommodate participants with auditory sensitivities, and a dedicated sensory-friendly quiet room was available throughout the event.

A Collective Effort, a Lasting Impact

None of this would have been possible without the initiative and dedication of the local organizing team – George Felício, Carina Dias, and Claudio Rocha – whose hard work turned the dream of Ôxe into a reality.

Fortaleza, with its modern infrastructure, warm hospitality, and never-before-hosted status, was the perfect backdrop for this pioneering event. But Ôxe is more than a one-off success: it represents a new phase for Mensa Brazil, one focused on deeper, more accessible regional engagement.

The momentum is already carrying forward: similar events are now being planned for southern and central-western Brazil in the coming months – each adapted to the local culture and needs, but all united by the same spirit of connection, curiosity, and shared intelligence.

As we like to say here: Ôxe… what a way to start something great.
