Gifted Youth

Mensa Programmes

MENSA

Mensa Gifted Youth programmes and activities vary from country to country, but their overall aim is to provide occasions for gifted children and young people to get together, make friends, learn new things and challenge themselves, all the while being supported by instructors and counsellors who have been trained in the field of gifted education.

Mensa Gifted Youth Events & Gatherings

Mensa Gifted Youth events and gatherings around the world include day trips, weekend excursions and summer camps. There are even Mensa family camps at which younger children can be accompanied by their parents and siblings.

So, what kind of things do the children and young people do at these events and gatherings? From algebra to abseiling, painting to puzzle-solving, robotics to running, and barbecues to biology, participants have a wealth of opportunities to challenge themselves, get creative and, well, just have fun!

Dedicated Teachers

Needless to say, these programmes would not be possible without the efforts of dedicated teachers with an interest in or specialist knowledge of gifted education.

These professionals often visit regular schools with the aim of helping their fellow educators recognise gifted qualities in their students, so that they can act on these signs and support them to develop their abilities.

European Mensa Juniors Camp (EMJC) 2025

Dates: From 17th to 26th October
Location: Duisburg, Germany

For children & young people aged between 12 and 17

🙂 The European Mensa Juniors Camp (EMJC) is an annual event for children and young people aged between 12 and 17. The working language of the event is English. The EMJC takes place in a different European country each year. This year, we are holding the EMJC in Duisburg, Germany, from 17th to 26th October. We are currently planning to hold EMJC 2026 in France.

The aim of the EMJC is to give young people from all over Europe and beyond the opportunity to meet like-minded students from other countries, to get to know each other and themselves, and to learn about other cultures.

📣📣📣📣 The EMJC is designed as an educational event. The participants take part in a project of their choosing from breakfast until lunch, and each project is organised and led by a supervisor. The voluntary afternoon program offers participants the opportunity to get to know the country and its culture, to take part in sporting activities, or go on interesting excursions and guided tours.

As part of the evening program, participants can get to know each other better, share stories, learn to dance, or put their knowledge to the test in fun quizzes. As the EMJC is a recognised educational event, in many countries it is possible for participants to be exempt from attending school for the duration of the camp so that they can take the opportunity to get to know other cultures and learn new things.

Indeed, EMJC participants benefit greatly from being among other gifted children and young people who understand their way of thinking and approach challenges in a similar way. They tend to understand social problems better, and recognise the difficulties that many other gifted and highly sensitive individuals face at school, or just in their daily lives.

For many children, attending an EMJC may be the first time they have entered such an empathetic environment – a place where they can just be themselves, be accepted and feel understood. In this way, the EMJC can even become an important formative experience in their young lives. It is also a great opportunity for them to learn a lot about interpersonal behaviour and form lasting friendships.

Our team of supervisors tries to create an environment that is as open and pleasant as possible for the participants. It is our goal that the participants are able to decide as freely as possible what they want to focus on, and learn to organise their time and energy independently.

This year’s EMJC is taking place at the same time as the 2025 IBD+ Meeting in Düsseldorf, which is just a short distance from Duisburg. Being so conveniently timed and located, we are hoping that parents all over Europe and beyond will seize the opportunity to enjoy attending IBD+ while their children have a wonderful experience just up the road in Duisburg!

If you think your child(ren) would be interested in joining this year’s EMJC, or if you would like to participate yourself, you can find more information on our website: https://www.mensa.de/kiju/camps/emjc/.

If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail at paul.janssen@member.mensa.org

Also, if you are interested in taking part in the camp as a supervisor, I would be delighted to hear from you. We are always looking for new people from all over the world to help us run our camps, and we would be happy to welcome you to our team.

If you are a member of a national Mensa and you would like a future EMJC to take place in your country, or if you are generally interested in organising events for gifted children and young people, please contact me at the above e-mail address.
